The Top 10 Art Exhibitions to See in 2019
The top ten art exhibitions to see in 2019 are as follows:
- “Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing” – It is showcased in the Bristol Museum, England. The United Kingdoms is honouring Renaissance painter Leonardo da Vinci with 12 exhibits that are held simultaneously around the world. The Bristol shows “A Life in Drawing” which features drawings from anatomical studies.
- “Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving” – Showcased at the Brooklyn Museum, this exhibit is a culmination of valuable paintings, drawings, photographs, prosthetics, painted corsets that were worn and done by Kahlo.
- “Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now” – The Guggenheim Museum, New York will host a yearlong exhibition to showcase the “Implicit Tensions”. It will be showcased in two instalments. The first will hold the polaroid, self-portraits, collages etc. And the second will feature the works of all the artists that Mapplethorpe inspired.
- “Ellsworth Kelly: Windows”– Ellsworth Kelly’s Windows series of six paintings will be honoured at the Centre of Pompidou, Paris, four years after his death. Kelly created these paintings between 1949 and 1950.
- “The Young Picasso” – This is the first exhibition that will be showcasing 80 iconic works of Picasso during his formative years. This includes 1903’s painting ‘La Vie’. The exhibition will be held at the Foundation Beyeler, Basel, Switzerland. The exhibition also features some of the most important works of modern art.
- “Tintoretto: Artist of Renaissance Venice” – This exhibition will be held at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Renaissance painter Jacopo Tintoretto’s paintings and drawings from his life will be showcased.
- “Camp: Notes on Fashion” – Susan Sontag’s seminal essay ‘Notes on Camp’ will be featured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Moreover, the Met drew inspiration from Sontag’s work this year for the Costume Institute show. It celebrated and witnessed humour and exaggeration in costume.
- “Manet and Modern Beauty” – The exhibition held at the Art Institute of Chicago, celebrates Edouard Manet’s later works which include watercolours, multifigure paintings and portraits of women representing the personification of spring and fall. Over 90 works are displayed, which also includes his letter that he wrote to a friend.
- The Venice Biennale – The central theme of the 58th biennale being held in Venice is the Chinese proverb “May you live in interesting times,”. It features artists from 120 countries around the world.
- “Shirin Neshat: I Will Greet the Sun Again”– This exhibition, being held at The Broad, Los Angeles, is of an Iranian artist Shirin Neshat. It includes video and photo chronicles of her investigation of Iranian history, both ancient and modern. Over 130 works will be displayed, including her best-known work, “Women of Allah”.
